Using Retinol In Summer | LM Clinical

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative, they are mainly used to treat anti-ageing worries as well as acne issues as well. Retinols are one of the best-known skincare ingredients out there.

You can get over-the-counter and prescribed retinoids, the prescribed product is a lot more potent.

A lot of people believe that you cannot use retinol in summer due to it making your skin extra sensitive to the sun. This is because of the exfoliation and removal of dead skin cells, however, this is a myth.

It is actually beneficial for your skin to begin using retinol in the summer, in particular, if you suffer from dry skin in the winter. This is due to the summer humidity, leaving your skin naturally moisturised during these warmer months. As a result of the additional hydration, you will see less dryness and flaky skin that can often be experienced when using retinol.

Although, you must take extra caution when using retinol and exposing your skin to the sun, as it can be easier to get sunburn when using retinol. If you pair retinol with sunscreen, this is the key to using retinol in the summer months.

It is important to note that if you have a holiday booked and are going to be in a stronger sun for large amounts of time, it is advised that you skip using your retinol until a day or so after returning.

Some tips to keep your skin healthy whilst using retinol in the summer months:

Apply one ounce of sun cream

This is roughly a shot glass size to apply to your face and body. You mustn't forget to rub a generous amount into your face as well as your ears, neck and back of your hands, many people forget these areas.

You must re-apply it every two hours at the very minimum. However, this is not to say that if you feel your skin burning and need more SPF before 2 hours, please do re-apply early.

To take extra caution, seek shade, wear a sun hat and sunglasses and more covering clothes. It is helpful to note that the sun is the hottest between 10 am - 4 pm.

How to Use Retinol

It is usually best to apply Retinol at night after your skin has been cleansed. Each morning, do not be afraid to be confident with your sun cream application.

If you have not used Retinol before, we suggest that you start with a lower strength and apply a pea-sized amount every 2-3 nights. After a while, you can slowly build this up by applying it every night.

Benefits Of Using Retinol

Retinol is great for a number of things, but mainly, fighting acne, reducing wrinkles and helps dark spots by brightening areas of dull skin.

It helps reduce the appearance of acne due to the increased cell turnover caused by exfoliation of the skin's surface, which decreases the production of oil. Therefore, all of these amazing benefits equate to a much more even skin tone.

The exfoliation creates new, brighter, more even-toned skin. This new skin has improved levels of elastin and collagen and is much stronger, thicker and smoother.

To sum up, Retinol helps your skin have fewer overall imperfections and creates relatively problem-free skin.
